Mendenhall Ice Caves

The Mendenhall ice caves are a wonder to behold.

NOTE: The Mendenhall ice Caves are always changing, collapsing and re-forming. You might not be able to walk in them, or they may not be formed.

WARNING: ice caves can collapse – Hike at your own risk.

Trail Time: Hike – 6 to 8 hours | Boat +/- 2 hour and 30 minutes to cave.

Trail Distance: 7 miles total.

Trail Difficulty: Mod./Hard

Trail Head: West Glacier Trail

Dangers: Parts of trail poorly marked, Hypothermia, Getting crushed, Drowning.

Tips: GPS, Layers, Metal Cleats, Extra Water. Boat: Beach your boat at the left side of the glacier, there is a small sandy beach. Its a few hundred yards across the stream, and up the ice (its steep, cleats recommend). Go up the ice towards the mountain/stream. The entrance is where the stream enters the glacier.
